Around 1880, new buildings sprouted around Sydney such as the Art
Gallery of New South Wales, the Sydney General Post Office, The
Town Hall of Sydney and the special Queen Victoria Building. Residential
areas grew around the city with each man wanting his own patch
of land with his wee cabin.
At the start of the 20th century, Sydney became the State Capital
of New South Wales. Major commercial networks were transforming the
city, such as the opening of the Central Rail Station, and electricity
transformed the city from the old style gas light system. Women were
allowed to vote and the city became very progressive until all was
to be halted due to the first World War.
Thousands of Australians
signed up and travelled to Europe to help the Allies defeat the Germans.
After the Great War the 1930s were a depressed time in Australia,
with many jobless. But a big boost to the character of the city was
the construction of the Sydney Harbour bridge in 1932.
